Cystitis is a common urinary tract health problem that can affect anyone, especially women. Annoying symptoms such as frequent urination, a burning sensation when urinating, or lower abdominal pain can cause discomfort and impact daily life.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the causes and treatment of cystitis, along with tips on how to maintain urinary health and prevent this condition.

Signs and symptoms of cystitis

Symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, followed by dull lower abdominal pain, frequent urination, dribbling, blood in the urine (which may appear pink or red), cloudy urine (normally, urine is clear), and a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Complications

If the condition is not properly treated or the infection is severe, complications may occur, including:

  • Pyelonephritis, which is a serious condition that is more difficult to treat and can lead to acute kidney failure and bloodstream infections.

  • In patients with recurrent cystitis who frequently use antibiotics, antibiotic resistance may develop. Additional tests are recommended to identify other possible causes, such as kidney stones in the ureters.

Treatment

Cystitis can be treated with antibiotics, which may be taken orally or administered by injection as prescribed by a doctor, typically for 3–10 days.

The treatment plan depends on the severity of the infection and the individual patient, along with lifestyle adjustments such as drinking plenty of water and avoiding holding in urine.
